Anheuser May Tap Modelo to Thwart InBev Bid
Anheuser-Busch Cos., the
maker of Budweiser beer, may try to thwart InBev
NV's $46.3 billion takeover offer by pursuing a
combination with Mexico's Grupo Modelo SAB.
READ MORE............
Shares of Anheuser-Busch hit an all-time on
Friday on reports that Europe's InBev SA was working on a $46 billion
bid for the St. Louis-based brewer.
Anheuser-Busch shares rose 6.7 percent, or $3.54, to $56.12 in midday
trading after reaching as high as $58.
The share surge followed a report on the Financial Times Web site that
InBev, the world's biggest brewer by volume, may directly approach
Anheuser chief executive August Busch IV.
InBev makes Beck's, Brahma, Stella Artois and Skol beer. Reports of its
interest in Anheuser-Busch have circulated for months.

Wii owners, get ready for the “Frat Party Game”
series. Yes, unlikely as it sounds, Beer Pong is
coming to WiiWare next month courtesy of developer
JV Games.
The game will use the Wii remote to throw balls into
cups, just like the classic drinking game. According
to the developer, the game has a “very accurate and
realistic throw system.”
The developer plans to extend this series with more
college-centric activities in future titles,
although the specifics are undisclosed.
Point Beer Goes Nude For The Summer
STEVENS
POINT -- It's called Nude Beach. The owner of the
brewery says he's hoping to get a reaction from
customers, in the form of smiles and curiosity.
"Nude Beach is our 4th seasonal beer and it's the
summer season ale, so we thought since the summer is
so much fun we thought we would have fun with the
beer and we came up with a lot of names and just
ended up with Nude Beach," says Joe Martino, the
owner of the brewery.
It's a wheat beer with a soft, malty taste. Whether
or not it's going to cause some controversy, we will
have to wait a bit to find out. Nude Beach won't hit
the shelves until May 1st.

Beer Fans Unveil Urinal Video Game
Two Belgian
beer fans
have
launched a
video game
named Place

which allows
players to
slalom down
ski slopes
or kill
aliens while
relieving
themselves
at urinals.
Werner

and Bart
Geraets, an

got the idea
while

yesterday.
"This thing
had to be
invented by
Belgian
people and
that's what
we are,"
they said.
The Place to

is designed
for two
users at a
time and
offers two
games -
blowing up
aliens in
outer space
or skiing
down a
virtual
slope.
Gamers hit
their target
by aiming at

positioned
on either
side of the
urinal.

Stella Artois Becomes a More Expensive Date!
InBev, the brewer of Stella
Artois and Beck's beer said Tuesday it was hiking
prices to offset soaring costs for raw ingredients
such as malt, barley and aluminum.
InBev SA Chief Executive Carlos Brito said the
inflationary environment "pressures everybody" in
the beer industry. You see the possibilities to pass
some of the cost to prices," he told reporters after
an annual shareholders' meeting. "If your brands are
strong enough, you should take that opportunity."
He said the company had already
implemented some price increases but refused to give
details on future pricing plans.

Beer Has
Gone to the Dogs
Hondenbier Kwispelbier, marketed
as "a beer for your best friend," is a beer brewed
especially for dogs by the Schelde brewery in the
Netherlands. Brewed with beef extract and malt, the
beer is the brainchild of pet shop owner Gerrie
Berendsen, who wanted her Weimaraners to share a
beer with her after a day's hunting. The
non-alcoholic beer costs four times as much as a
regular Dutch lager. "Kwispel" is the Dutch word for
wagging a tail.
In the U.S., the non-alcoholic and non-carbonated
Happy Tail Ale from Dog Star Brewing (CA) is another
beer brewed especially for dogs. This canine
quencher also features a beefy flavor (from
all-natural beef drippings) and is fortified with
glucosamine and vitamin E.
For at least last 3 yrs, annual
surveys by Mediamark Research show about 42% of
adults drink beer (at least occasionally). That
translates to approx 92.3 mil beer drinkers. Men
(55.9%) still far more likely to drink beer than
women (29.7%). Southerners (38%) least likely to
partake of the brew, compared to all other regions
(43.5% to 44.5%). Whites (43%) and Hispanics (44.4%)
remain much more likely to consume beer than blacks
(32.5%) or Asians (36%).
Less predictable perhaps: likelihood of drinking
beer increases directly with household income. Less
than 30% of those in poorest households drink beer
compared to 51% in wealthiest. Then too, likelihood
of drinking beer increases with education. And tho
21-28 yr-olds key mktg target, 25-34 yr-olds more
likely to drink beer than 21-24 yr olds (51.2% vs
47.8%), Lots more detail on these overall
demographics, plus brand data, in our 2008 Beer
Industry Update. Visit our website to order:
